1. while galloping:

- на скаку{{}}≈ at a gallop;

- as one is galloping (along);

|| на всём скаку{{}}≈ at (a) full gallop;

- (gallop) at foil tilt.

     ♦ "Вот наконец мы были уж от него [Казбича] на ружейный выстрел... Смотрю: Печорин на скаку приложился из ружья... "Нестреляйте! - кричу я ему, - берегите заряд; мы и так его догоним"" (Лермонтов 1). "Well, at last we got within rifle range of him [Kazbich]. ... I looked and saw Pechorin take aim at full gallop. 'Don't fire!' I cried to him. 'Save your shot, we'll catch up with him anyway'" (1a).

     ♦ Воротца на задворках были открыты, и Михаил на всём скаку влетел в заулок (Абрамов 1). The gate around back was open, and Mikhail galloped into the yard at full tilt (1a).

2. на скаку остановить лошадь, остановиться to stop a horse suddenly, come to an abrupt halt:

- rein in a horse from a full gallop (to a sudden halt);

- pull up a horse abruptly (short) (from a full gallop);

- come (bring one's horse) to a sudden halt.
